Welcome to the magic of the Spring (Vernal) Equinox, where science meets magic, and true balance is experienced, as earth begins to come back to life. Let’s explore the ancient mysticism connected to equinoxes, with a special focus on spring, and how you can embrace its magic now.

Understanding Equinoxes
An equinox occurs when day and night are in perfect equilibrium, marking the gateway between seasons. In modern terms, it’s a celestial event caused by the tilt of the Earth’s axis and its orbit around the sun. But in the realm of mysticism, equinoxes are portals to powerful energies, symbolizing harmony, transition, and the cycles of nature.
Midway between the solstices lie the equinoxes. Between the longest night of the year (winter solstice) and the longest day of the year (summer solstice), we have perfect equilibrium in the spring equinox, when day and night, light and dark, are equal in length. (The autumn equinox lies between summer and winter.)
The spring equinox is on or around March 20, depending on where you are in the northern hemisphere. (In the southern hemisphere, it’s in September.) The day after the equinox, the days will begin to lengthen, bringing with it warmer days. Embrace this moment of in-between!
Ancient Traditions and Modern Magic
Ancient traditions and lore surrounding the spring equinox are as old as human history itself and span all cultures.
Ostara (Easter), one of the 8 sabbats of the Wheel of the Year, is named after Eostre, a Germanic goddess of spring, dawn, and fertility. Her symbols—hares, eggs, and blooming flowers—represent fertility, renewal, and life returning after winter. It’s easy to see where the true origins of our modern Easter celebrations originate from!

Sacred Sites Aligned with the Equinox
Many ancient sites are aligned with the sun at the equinox, showing how the ancient ones tracked the movement of the skies to mark these significant portals of time and magic.
The Great Sphinx (Egypt)
The Great Sphinx aligns with the sunrise on the equinox, connecting the day with resurrection and divine balance.
Stonehenge (England)
One of the most famous equinox-aligned sites, Stonehenge, has a mysterious and powerful connection to the sun’s movements. The stones align perfectly with the sunrise on the equinox, indicating that the ancient ones tracked these celestial events for ritual and magical purposes.
Chichén Itzá (Mexico)
On the Spring and Fall Equinoxes, the shadow of the sun creates a serpent along the steps of El Castillo, a temple dedicated to Kukulcán, the feathered serpent god. This spectacle was a sign of renewal and divine presence.
Cairn T (Ireland)
This Neolithic passage tomb, located at Loughcrew, aligns with the rising equinox sun, which illuminates the inner chamber’s carved symbols, marking cycles of life, death, and rebirth.
Angkor Wat (Cambodia)
The main temple is aligned so that the sun rises directly over the central tower on the equinox, reinforcing the temple’s cosmic and spiritual significance.

The Spark of Aries
The spring equinox coincides with the beginning of Aries season (the astrological new year). Aries is the spark. It’s where everything begins. After the deepest, darkest times and dormancy of winter, Aries season and the first days of spring marks the time when the earth begins to awaken, and transformation commences.
Embracing the Equinox Magic
This season of balance is an invitation to find your own equilibrium and to start anew within the ever-evolving world. Here are some ways you can work with the spring equinox energies.
Sunrise Alignment: Greet the sunrise with meditation, love, or thanks, honoring the light’s return. Light candles in yellow, gold, or green to welcome the sun’s power.
Planting & Manifestation: Plant seeds physically (in a garden) and metaphorically (intentions for the months ahead). This is a powerful time to manifest what you want to see unfurl as the year unfolds.
Nature Connection: Take a mindful walk in nature, observing the earth coming back to life. Where can you see the beginnings of growth? Where can you hear the beautiful early spring sounds of birdsong?
Cleansing & Renewal: Declutter and cleanse your home, refreshing it and opening it up to receive new blessings in the season ahead. Cleanse yourself. A simple bath or shower with intention will do. Add salt for purification and herbs related to spring, like lavender, basil, or mint, if you like.
Egg & Fertility Magic: Decorate eggs with symbols of growth and prosperity.
Bury an egg or egg shells in your garden to bless the soil and encourage abundance.
In this resting moment between contraction and expansion and contraction, let’s honor where we are, at the center of it all.
Embrace, Reflect, and Align
The spring equinox is not just a scientific event; it is a mystical opportunity to connect with nature’s rhythms and weave magic into your life.
As you embrace the ancient traditions, reflect on your past season of rest and decide where you’d like to go in the seasons ahead. Plant your seeds of intention. And prepare yourself ad your space to receive.
