The Magic of Mantras: A Spiritual Guide
Enlightenment, Awakening, and Transformation for Everyone
The mantra is rooted in ancient traditions, transcending cultural boundaries. They offer moments of connection with the divine within and hold opportunities to manifest change.
Ancient Origins
Mantras originate in Hinduism and Buddhism, where they were — and are — used as instruments of meditation and devotion. The word “mantra” itself is derived from Sanskrit, with ‘man’ meaning “mind” and ‘tra’ meaning “instrument” or “tool.”
The Universality of Mantras
Cultures around the world have used repetitive sounds and phrases for healing, guidance, and spiritual growth.
Mantras are powerful tools that work through a combination of sound vibrations, intention, and focused repetition. They tend to be composed of sacred words, phrases, or sounds that carry spiritual significance.
When a mantra is chanted, spoken, or mentally repeated, it creates a specific vibrational pattern that resonates with the practitioner’s body and mind.
Sanskrit mantras, such as the powerful OM, have cosmic meaning and sound that resonates with a specific aspect of the Universe. In the case of OM, it is the sound of the Universe itself. When you chant OM, you align your energy — your mind, body, and spirit — in resonance with the entire Universe — and with creation itself.
Before you continue reading, I invite you to take a moment to “OM” now. Sit up tall and comfortable, close your eyes and take a few cleansing breaths. Then say, OOOOMMMMMM just a few times. Feel the humming in your body. And know it is aligned in that moment with all of creation.
When you focus your intention and energy on a mantra, you are retraining your mind to think in a new direction. By returning to a mantra repeatedly, you create new neural pathways and thought patterns to help you think differently — and as you do that, you become a new version of yourself, creating a new reality.
You may wish to sit in meditation and chant, creating a different level of vibration. However, you can also just choose a mantra to work with for a certain amount of time, and return to it as needed. For example, I’ve been using a specific mantra for about a month. I’ll keep returning to it until it no longer feels needed — until it has become a part of me and no longer needs to be practiced.
The Divine ‘I Am’
The phrase “I Am” is not just an everyday phrase. It is literally the name of God. How can that be, you may ask, when we say, I am all the time?
That is exactly the point. The name of God, I Am, is you. It's me. It's everyone.
When God is asked to identify who God is, God says “I AM.” And so:
When you say those same words, “I AM” — you are identifying your own divinity. You are God, of the same name — I AM.
When you speak or think the words, I Am, you are saying the name of God—which is you as much as it is a deity you may believe in outside of yourself.
Everything you say following the phrase, I Am, is an affirmation of who + what you are. It is an act of creation, from your own God self out to the universe.
Start to become aware of what you say after the powerful statement “I Am" as if it were a spell or wish you were carrying out into the Universe. And choose those words wisely.
As you move forward in your days and weeks ahead, open up your awareness to how you use the words “I Am”. Start to replace negative “I am” statements with positive ones. Do you regularly chant or think: I’m broke, I’m sick, I’m tired? What can you replace them with that resonates with you? In order for a mantra to work for you, you need to believe it….
What to Do When a Mantra Doesn’t Resonate
Mantras only create change — or sustain reality — when you believe them. When a particular mantra or affirmation doesn’t seem to align with your current state of being or needs, you have two powerful choices at your disposal.
1. Change the Mantra: If the mantra you’re using doesn’t seem to be resonating, change the mantra. This can be as simple as making minor adjustments to the existing mantra or switching to an entirely different one. Explore different mantras and affirmations to find one that truly aligns with your intentions and feelings.
Here are a couple magical additions you can add to most I Am mantras:
I am willing to believe…
I am open to receiving proof that…
If you want to change the “I’m poor” mantra, but don’t believe the mantra “I Am Rich,” you can either go in a different direction with your mantra, or tweak it until you believe. Perhaps you believe “I Am abundant in time” or you can tweak it to “I am willing to believe in my financial abundance” or “I am open to seeing the evidence of my increasing abundance.”
2. Change Your Perspective: Sometimes, the issue may not lie with the mantra itself but with our perspective. Take a moment for self-reflection. What about the mantra doesn’t resonate with you? Is there an underlying belief or doubt that’s blocking its effectiveness? A question / statement I love around this is “How can I see this differently?” or state “I am willing to see things differently.” The “I am willing” preamble for mantras works to shift your perspective, as well.
Dive deep into your inner world and ask yourself why you don’t feel whole or aligned with the mantra. Consider if there’s a higher perspective you can adopt that suddenly makes the mantra feel true and powerful. It might require a shift in consciousness, a letting go of limiting beliefs, or a broader understanding of your journey. The power of mantras often lies in your ability to embody the intention behind them.
Adjust your perspective until you and the mantra align — or shift your mantra until it aligns with you!
Becoming Your Mantras
Mantras, especially ‘I Am’ mantras, are a timeless and universal tool for spiritual growth. They are vessels for intention. By embracing the divine name ‘I Am,’ we acknowledge the eternal presence of the divine in all aspects of our existence.
As you move forward with mantras, remember that their magic lies in your intention and belief. Embrace the transformative potential within you and let the power of the words “I Am” be sacred tools on your path to enlightenment. Namaste’. 🌟✨
